This three-day in-person course led by Harding Music in central Brighouse is ideal if you are preparing for the ABRSM Grade 1 Music Theory exam and/or want to kickstart your knowledge of basic music theory - the nuts and bolts of how to read music and understand how it works - as we aim to address all elements of the ABRSM Grade 1 Music Theory syllabus.

About this course:

  • This three-day in-person course is ideal if you are a new-starter to any instrument and wish to learn how to read and understand music and it’s inner-workings. 
  • The course draws upon intuitive musical understanding and focuses on stave notation in a fun a practical way to bring the concepts ’off the page’.
  • The syllabus will also provide you with a foundation for more developing music theory studies In future. 
  • The Exam: ABRSM Music Theory Grades 1 - 5 exams now take place exclusively online. Your exam entry fee (£37.00) is included within the course fee and entries are administered by Emily Harding at Harding Music. Exams can be done at home after the course at any time within 28 days of the entry being made at the end of the course (22nd August 2023). Exams can be taken at the Harding Music studio in Brighouse in a session TBC according to demand or at home at a time to suit the candidate.

Who is the course for?

  • Anyone who is new to reading music or who has started learning any instrument and wishes to kickstart their musical literacy much faster than what is possible within the average practical music lesson.

What can I expect?

  • The course is class-based, and attendees all learn together as a group.
  • Additional 1:1 focused sessions can be booked at £20/30-minute lesson with Emily Harding at mutually convenient times if required, though this course does provide a comprehensive study of the ABRSM Grade 1 Music Theory syllabus.
  • There are three main areas of study: TIME [time signatures / rhythm values / notation grouping], PITCH [clefs / accidentals and their cancellation / transposition / keys and scales / intervals / chords progressions / chords and their inversions] and SOUND & SIGNS [terms and signs].
  • Most exercises involve writing within the required publications (provided in the course fee) and on manuscript paper (provided in the course fee). Some exam-style questions will be conducted online in the classroom and on sample examination papers (provided in the course fee).
  • Following the three-day course, attendees then revise, and Emily submits them into the exam. Exams can be taken online at home, or Emily Harding will run a supervised, supported and guided examination session on a day/time TBC according to demand for those who wish to sit the exam in this supportive environment.

About the Tutor:
EMILY HARDING BMus(hons) PGCE(cert.)
Based in Huddersfield and having trained at The University of Huddersfield and the Royal Northern College of Music, Emily performs across the UK as a professional soloist and ensemble member for various groups, including with the BBC, Cliff Richard, Andrea Corr, Symphonic Ibiza and Ibiza in Symphony. She was Orchestral Leader of the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra from 2013-2019 before embarking upon a range of alternative projects.
Emily runs the Harding Music teaching studio in Brighouse nurturing developing youth and adult musicians in violin, viola, piano and music theory. She is a highly experienced classroom teacher at secondary and primary levels (former Head of Junior Music at The Grammar School at Leeds), has worked extensively across the north in various music services and has taught privately for 20 years.
